The Sunday Lunch She Didn’t Cook

A mother relaxes with tea while her family handles Sunday lunch and cleanup around her.
A mother relaxes with tea while her family handles Sunday lunch and cleanup.

On that Sunday, she did something that shocked everyone.

She didn’t cook lunch.

At 10:30, her husband walked into the kitchen.

“What are we making?”

“Nothing.”

He laughed because he thought she was joking.

She wasn’t.

She had already made tea.

She had watered the balcony plants.

She had even folded the laundry.

But the cooker was untouched.

“What about lunch?” her daughter asked.

“You can make it.”

“Me?”

“Yes. You have two hands.”

Her daughter stared at her.

“Amma, are you angry?”

“No.”

“Then why aren’t you cooking?”

She thought for a second.

“Because I don’t want to.”

That answer made everyone quiet.

They ordered dosa.

Then someone wanted chutney.

“We have coconut.”

“Amma.”

“Fine. Order chutney too.”

They ate on paper plates.

She sat with them.

Nobody complained.

After lunch, her husband washed the plates.

Her daughter swept the kitchen.

Her son put the leftovers in the fridge.

She sat on the balcony.

Later, her daughter came outside.

“Amma?”

“Hmm?”

“You should do this again.”

She smiled.

“I might.”

From inside the house, her husband shouted,

“Not next Sunday!”

She laughed.
